Muthoni Gakwa

Hi, I’m Muthoni!

I believe the people closest to a problem are often the ones best placed to solve it, and that everyone deserves a dignified life. That belief has guided my path, from a community savings platform I started in my twenties to my work today.

At Metis Collective, I serve as Executive Director. Our work is to support proximate education leaders across East Africa as they grow ideas that change how children learn. I am so proud of our fellows who lead remarkable work in their communities, and seeing the teachers we work alongside bring new energy and care into their classrooms every day.

My work is mostly about strategy and execution: helping good ideas find the structures and teams to carry them. I try to bring joy and a love of learning to how we work together. I'm also grateful to serve as Board Chair of the Kalobeyei Initiative for Better Life, a refugee-led education organization in Kakuma.

I was raised in Kenya by two educators. When I'm not working, you'll find me on a forest trail or on the back of a bodaboda, where I do my best thinking.
